Beni Nichirin® herbaceous peony
Sun wheel crimson
Beautiful contrast with the inner petals
Herbaceous peonies form a clump of foliage that disappears in winter. Their flowers, less voluminous than those of shrubs, are no less charming.
Delicate and fragrant, the herbaceous peony will enhance your garden! The leaves are deciduous and, unlike the tree peony, the herbaceous peony disappears completely in winter, growing back from the stump in spring. It can reach heights of up to 1 metre.
When planted, the herbaceous peony can be a little fussy: it can take 2 years after planting before it flowers.
When planted in the right spot, the herbaceous peony will flower and foliage more and more abundantly, for years to come! It will embellish your garden for a few weeks (2 to 4 weeks), from late April to mid-June, depending on the variety.
First and foremost, choose a sunny, slightly shady spot to plant your herbaceous peony. You can plant it in a bed, or as an isolated feature. If you want to show it off on a terrace, then plant it in a very large pot.
The herbaceous peony is easier to maintain than the shrubby peony: it doesn't need pruning, as it disappears in winter. It doesn't need much fertilizing or watering, except in the first few years and during periods of drought.
On the other hand, ensure good drainage, especially if the soil is clayey: peonies don't like their roots in water.
If necessary, you can help the herbaceous peony to stand upright with a discreet stake.
