Zanthoxylum piperitum, related to the Sichuan pepper tree, is a small, thorny, deciduous tree in the citrus family.
It produces flowers in May-June, followed by small red berries in September-October, of which only the shell remains when ripe. Once dried, the fruit shell gives a lemony, spicy flavor.
